SYDNEY, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Three men have been arrested over an attempt to import more than 300 kg of methamphetamine concealed in tiles into Australia.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said that two Sydney men, aged 39 and 56, were arrested on Thursday and were expected to be charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug.

It came after a 39-year-old Melbourne man was arrested and charged with the same offense in May in connection with the case. If convicted, all three men face a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

The AFP said in a statement that it commenced an investigation in April after the Australian Border Force intercepted about 360 boxes of mosaic tiles, believed to have originated from the Middle East, which were impregnated with methamphetamine.

Subsequent testing found that the consignment contained 360 kg of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of 333 million Australian dollars (218.8 million U.S. dollars).

AFP officers removed the illicit drugs and delivered the shipment to a facility in southwest Sydney, where the 39-year-old Sydney man assisted with storing it before the 56-year-old man collected the consignment.

It will be alleged in court that both men knew the shipment contained illicit drugs and were to be paid for their activities.

The tiles were then sent on to Melbourne, where the second 39-year-old was the intended recipient.

Investigators executed a search warrant at his home on May 12 and seized electronic devices that allegedly linked him to the drug importation plot.
