MADRID, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Jonas Vingegaard of Visma-Lease-A-Bike won the penultimate stage of the Vuelta a Espana on Saturday to all but assure he will be crowned as the overall winner on Sunday in Madrid.
The Danish rider went into the testing 20th stage, which had two climbs of the Puerto de Navacerrada to the north of Madrid and finished on the unpaved track to the Bola del Mundo, with a 44-second lead over Joao Almeida of UAE Team Emirates XRG.
Vingegaard attacked on the final climb to the Bola del Mundo, finishing 11 seconds ahead of his teammate Sepp Kuss, with Almeida fading in the final kilometer to finish 22 seconds down in fifth place.
That gives Vingegaard a one minute and 16 second lead over Almeida, while Tom Pidcock (Q36.5) will also be on the podium after digging deep to only cede six seconds to Jai Hindley (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe).
Sunday's 21st and final stage covers 103.6 kilometers, including several circuits of Madrid city center, which should serve as a homage to the overall winner and end in a sprint finish. ■
