SEOUL, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export of information and communications technology (ICT) products rose for the seventh straight month due to strong semiconductor demand, government data showed Sunday.
The ICT products shipment jumped 11.1 percent from a year earlier to 22.87 billion U.S. dollars in August, keeping an upward trend since February, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
Chip export soared 27.0 percent to hit a record high of 15.11 billion dollars on robust demand for high-end products, such as double data rate 5 (DDR5) and high bandwidth memory (HBM) used in generative artificial intelligence (AI) chipsets.
Display panel shipment retreated 9.4 percent to 1.82 billion dollars, while mobile phone export dropped 15.4 percent to 1.33 billion dollars.
Shipment for computers and peripherals dipped 16.6 percent to 1.34 billion dollars, but communications equipment export added 1.8 percent to 190 million dollars.
Import for ICT products gained 7.6 percent over the year to 12.53 billion dollars in August, sending the trade surplus in the ICT industry to 10.34 billion dollars.
Imports for mobile devices, computers and communications equipment posted a double-digit expansion, but display panel imports reduced in single digits. ■
